Chuc Mung Nam Muoi

Happy New Year!

This is the year of the Ox (China) or Water Buffalo (Vietnam). It is supposed to be a very successful year for those born the year of the Ox, including 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961 or 1949. Tet, as the Vietnamese call it, is a time of family togetherness, good luck, forgiving others for any hard feelings over the past year, new clothes and good food. The children usually receive red envelopes that contain “lucky money." Many Vietnamese people prepare for Tet by preparing special traditional foods and cleaning the house. Most importantly people in Vietnam never take the trash out of the house for the first couple days of the first month of the new year, as it is believed to lead to bad luck. There is a different day set aside for the first few days of the new year to visit first family, friends, teachers etc.

I wrote more about Tet last year in this post if you would like to read it.
